I read an article today about the Utah govt and how they are using Twitter. It made me think back to a conference I attended a year ago where Shel Hotlz presented Twitter to my pr group. I had never heard of Twitter and after his presentation I thought it was one of the dumbest things I had ever heard of. I did not understand why people would want to sit and stare at a computer screen that listed what people were doing. "I'm eating an apple" or "I think I will go swimming today" were some of the first posts I noticed. What was the significance of these kind of posts and how does this impact social media for public relation professionals I wondered.
So I signed up for Twitter and never looked at it again, until a few weeks ago. I started reading articles and decided I was going to Twitter whether I liked it or not. It's been one week and eight Tweets later and I think I'm finally getting the hang of it. I still have a lot to learn but I figure it will come with time. So with that said, go ahead and follow me and we will go from there! http://twitter.com/mlh0919

I had the same response to twitter when a co-worker first tried to explain it to me. Why would I care to see such short, pointless comments about what people are doing? Isn't that why facebook has the "what are you doing right now?" status tab?
Wanting to learn more about the differences in a variety of social media options, I went to twitter.com and watched the tutorial. I understand a little better, in the sense that its purpose is to keep you connected with the people you have a hard time staying in touch with. I think it's a simplified version of facebook that allows you to know what your friends and family are up to/interested in by simply following their brief updates on twitter. For example, I might have a friend who posts a short comment about how she is so excited to go to a certain concert, and I might learn something new about her, such as a new favorite band. Twitter helps you maintain social chit-chat that you maybe don't have time for otherwise.
It's funny, I have so much to say about it and I still don't have a profile with Twitter. I attempted to sign up a few days ago, but got stuck trying to come up with the coolest log-in ID ever! I'm still working on it :)
